About

Welcome to Parental Rights Matters !!

My name is Katia Colon, and I reside in New York City. I am a parent who has faced so much agony and mistreatment simply for advocating for my child’s needs in school.

First and foremost, I want to say that I DO NOT have an issue with special education. Special education has NEVER been a problem for me. I have a problem with being strong-armed to accept a special education classification and evaluation that I firmly believe is inaccurate and wrong about my child. Then, the NYC School used child protective services as a weapon against me to force me to comply. I didn’t even know my child was on special education until Child Protective Services (CPS), also known as Administration for Children Services (ACS) in the City of New York, arrived at my door for an initial visit.

Administrators of the Department of Education made decisions regarding my child’s education without my knowledge or consent, kept information from me relevant to the prevention of the CPS proceeding, and misrepresented educational records, which contained information I relied on, unaware it was misleading. Through the ACS Article X proceeding, I learned that the staff at PS 83 held secret IEP meetings and secretly revised my son’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP) without my knowledge or consent.

Parents have a right to voice their concerns in their children schools and put those rights to used by being active participants in their children’s education without fear of retribution.

I initially created this page to share my side of the story and present a balance to the allegations used against me by the NYC school district, and CPS just went along with it. This website may contain records, reports, audio, and emails detailing and illustrating my side of the story and innocence.

As time progressed, I realized that what I have experienced is much bigger than just me. Parental Rights is an essential issue of discussion. And although it has personally happened to me, and I share my experience here, I realize that there are millions of parents whose parental rights were violated. An educational system initiated the act of violating my parental rights. I believe that when transparency and informed consent become the forefront of communication of how systems and agencies connect with parents, these violations should drop in quantifiable numbers or become non-existent.

This should not be happening. Parents should not be unjustly and illegally losing rights to their children. It is inconceivable that involved parents would ever have to be treated this way.

My hope is that my story gets media attention. PLEASE SHARE MY STORY either by reposting or/and sharing my post online or by picking up my story.
